Dear Diary,
I entered the Mad Money Contest today. I am hoping to win some extra cash for Nanny Paloosa. I decided to write about Why I Became a Nanny. I left a lot of stuff out. I didn't know how to explain how I was a shy person as a kid and I loved taking care of the kids at big family parties. I loved the way kids "got me" and how I showed them how to their imagination and slowly that shy kid in the corner joined in. ...
I understood how it felt to be shy and it made me feel good that I could make that child smile...It wasn't till mom's friend shoved $5 into my hand one night to say thank you--that I realized I could make money doing what I love!
It hasn't been the courses on early childhood or the hands on internships from the nanny school that made me a nanny. But how do you describe love? Even on a hard day of schedules, crying sick babies, that love overwhelms me as they relax in my arms or like Timmy the other day after we had a battled getting him dressed said "I love you Nanny" out of the blue like the battle never took place! Man I love that stubborn little boy! All I know is I was born to be a nanny....

Dear Diary,
I entered the Mad Money Contest today! She said grammar didn't count--to just speak from the heart! I met another Spanish speaking nanny on the FB page and she is nervous about coming. So I thought my story might encourage her!
I told them how I came to the US at 19 to join my family and hard we all worked to get visas and green cards for the rest of the family to join us. I wrote about how mama was a nanny and got me a nanny job as soon as I arrived. It was important for all of us to work and save to help the rest of our family. I had always watched over the children when my parents and family worked. So I was scared but knew I could do it. I was lucky--it was a nice family. One day I realized that unlike my friends who dreaded to go to work--I loved my job!
It hurt in the beginning when I took the kids to the park and heard nannies talk about illegal nannies and we only did it because no one else would hire us. I am legal I wanted to yell! Yes, it was the only job I could get in the beginning but I stayed in it because I am very good at it! One nanny was always nice to me and told me one day about National Nanny Training day in the city that weekend! I was so excited! For the first time, all the nannies there accepted that I was serious about this job. It's been 10 years now and I still go to the training days plus nanny conferences now!
I teach my charges Spanish and about my culture. But we learn about many cultures as we explore museums and celebration days. I no longer hide my face on walks with my charges around other nannies--I stand proud and maybe it was because I finally believed in myself--that they began to believe in me too.

Dear Diary,
I did it! I am going to Nanny Palooza! I hope all those young nannies accept me. I am so much older than them and have only been a nanny for 6 years! Though technically speaking, I
am sure if heaven is divided into careers, I was from the nanny division! So they have this little thing called Mad Money contest where you can win some free money by submitting an essay. I don't really need the money but I thought maybe it would help them understand why some one my age became a nanny!
I told them how I raised my own kids and how it seemed mothers were always asking me to watch a kid here and there when their help was sick or didn't show up. It was never about money back then--mothers just bartered for free babysitting of their kids down the road.
When the kids were all in school, it just seemed natural to volunteer at the school for kids who needed one on one tutoring. And when they needed a Girl Scout volunteer, well, my daughter was in the troop and we did have blast camping though Lord knows that first night I heard every little sound and didn't get a wink of sleep!
My husband used to ask me if there was a job for a professional volunteer!
I don't know how the years passed by so quickly! Then one day my kids were grown. I just got restless and yes, a bit depressed. It was like I was no longer needed--everyone said be proud you raised them to be independent. I was......I just wish I hadn't done such a good job...You'd think at least one of them could be a slacker!
Then that fateful day I took the casserole to that couple that had moved in and she seem so frazzled trying to unpack with the 3 year old twins acting crazy. It just seemed natural to step in and help. How did I know she would offer me a job that day to be her nanny?! When she told me what she would pay, I about fainted! My husband was a little nervous but I put my foot down and said I was going to be a nanny! Best decision I ever made! My twins are now in school full time but she had a friend who needed "my excellent services"! I am "excellent"! So I said yes and the twins still come to me after school too for a few hours. They are becoming excellent helpers!
I started Googling a couple of years ago and found there were classes for nannies and even conferences! I am loving meeting all these young women and even a few my age! After answering questions at a training day in our town, I was asked to do a workshop next year! Me! A trainer! I tried to tell her I had only been a nanny for 5 years and she said "only in jobs" Ms Adams--you have been a nanny forever! She even said I was a Super Nanny!! You could have knocked me over with a feather!
Third reader turns around and
Super Nanny singers join them for a rousing song finish!
